School Board, here we come....

I may not have mentioned this on the blog....but Arnie is running for school board. It's a pretty highly contested race, apparently we're not the only people in town who decided we weren't willing to settle on a mediocre education for our kids. We should have yard signs by the end of the week, and then we're off to the races.

The Norfolk Daily News ran a front page story on Arnie's efforts on Friday....

School board candidates form coalition

Three candidates for the Norfolk school board have formed a coalition with hopes that voters in May and November will cast ballots for all of them.

“If there’s one new person elected to a board, you can only have so much impact. But with three elected, you can really make a change,” said Arnie Robinson.
Robinson, Troy Brooks and Bob Waite all filed for seats on the Norfolk school board. They’re three of seven candidates — including three incumbents — vying for the three seats on the board. The top six vote-getters in the May 15 primary will advance to the November election, which is when the three board members will be elected.

The other candidates in the race are Clark Froehlich, Joel Carlson and Alfredo Ramirez, all incumbents, and Sandy Wolfe.

Waite, Brooks and Robinson said they all independently reached their decision to run for the school board, but they soon realized they shared the same perspective on issues pertaining to the Norfolk Public Schools.

They acknowledge that their coalition approach to their candidacies is not often seen in Norfolk.
“It’s a team approach. It’s unusual,” Waite said.
The three said their candidacies are focusing on the need for open communication between the district and taxpayers, as well as between board members, administrators, parents, faculty and students.
They said they also agree on the need to maximize available resources in the district, and that student achievement needs to be a paramount focus.

“School board members need to be ultimately responsible for what goes on in a school district. They need to be held accountable,” Brooks said.

While the three share similar viewpoints in regard to the school board, they’re different in many ways, too.

Robinson, who is executive vice president at Norfolk Iron & Metal, grew up in Norfolk and was a student in the Norfolk school system. Brooks lived elsewhere before moving to Norfolk to become sales and shipping manager at Nucor Steel. Waite is a retired Norfolk Public Schools administrator.
Brooks said he has a fresh perspective having lived in Norfolk a relatively short time. “I understand how important schools are when someone is considering moving to a new community,” he said.
Waite said he relishes the chance to give back to the Norfolk school district in a different way than when he was its business manager. “I want to help make everyone — administrators, faculty and students — successful,” he said.

Robinson said that his recent involvement in economic development efforts in Norfolk have reinforced the importance of a strong school system in terms of developing quality young men and women who will become the community’s next generation of leaders.

“In all of this, students obviously are the most important,” he said.

The three said they have enjoyed discussing school-related issues among themselves and would enjoy sharing their views with district patrons and faculty members, too.

“The morale of educators is important. They need to know that their voice matters,” Robinson said.
“You need community involvement when it comes to making those hard choices. They may not ultimately agree with the decision made, but at least they will understand why it was made,” Waite added.

why can't she just ask daddy....

Maggie has been really tired this week, so this morning I decided to let her sleep in a bit and then I'd take her to school a little later then usual. When she got up, she told me she was too tired for school today and she thought she'd just take the day off and stay with "that new teenager girl."  I've been working alot the last couple weeks, and Grace has had a new baby sitter a couple of times. Maggie is a little jealous that Grace is getting to spend her mornings with a TEENAGER, because of course they are the coolest things on the planet, while she has to be at school. Once I told Maggie the "teenager girl" wasn't coming today, and assured her that Grace wouldn't be having any fun (napping in my studio closet), she agreed to go to school.

On our way to school, she was talking about Calves and a few other baby animals, then she stopped (I could almost hear her thinking) and said......"How do doctors get baby calves out of their Mommy's?" Why can't she ask her dad these questions???  Remember she assumes all babies are born via C-section like Gracie was, for now I just let her go with that theory. So when I told her how Cow's have babies she was a bit shocked. She thought some more, and then asked about puppies, then cats. Then she asked how baby cows get bottles....again, I didn't breast feed Grace so that's all a foreign concept to her....I told her the truth about where calves get their milk and she said "gross"....I asked where she thought our milk came from and she said that wasn't gross because the farmers got it and put it in a jug first. Then we had to have a conversation about how every ones mom and dad get to decide when they are old enough to know some of these things so she shouldn't go to school and tell her friends what we'd talked about....I can only imagine the conversations that happened at school today!

I learned my lesson, from now on Daddy's taking Maggie to school......every day!

Back on the charts!

Gracie went for her one year check-up today and she's back on the charts. She's in the 96th% for both her height and weight. She weighs 26 lbs and is 32 inches tall. (just for a comparison Maggie was 24.5 lbs and 31" tall, when she was 1)

Grace needed 4 shots and had to have her blood tested. She wasn't a very happy camper when we left the doctors office, but she recovered quickly. Over the last week or so she's officially made the transition from formula to milk. Now that she's made the switch, I'll start working on taking away her bottle.....at least that's what I told the doctor. (Sounds like a nightmare to me!)

Yesterday we finally had our last appointment with the helmet doctor. He reviewed the before and after scans with me and after checking out Grace's head, officially said she's done!! In the time she had her helmet, her head grew 7mm, but the growth was completely restricted in the front and from side to side, so it was all applied to the back (flat) part. The biggest impact was in the symmetry of her face. Her forehead and cheeks were showing some variation before the helmet and now they match up perfectly! All in all, it was a good experience and I'm glad we did it. Grace didn't seem to be bothered by the helmet and when she's a teenager I hope she'll appreciate her round head and symmetrical face :)
Bye, Bye pink helmet!
Yesterday, Mom and Maggie ran to the mall quick. They had a little time before they needed to pick Uncle Deem up at school, so Maggie asked if they could ride the escellator. They rode and rode and rode, they went to different stores, they rode the big escellator in the middle of the mall, they did them all. That's why little kids need Grandma's!!! After they were done Maggie told my mom that was her special treat for the day :) Then they went to Panera and shared a couple of cookies.

monkey see, monkey do....

celebrating after the helmet doctor with some cheez-its at the carwash....

Gracie still prefers to crawl but she'll take a few steps occasionally.

Maggie wrote Gracie's whole name on the driveway, all by herself, notice how she spelled her middle name :)

Tonight Maggie came up from the basement in this get-up...and asked me to take her "fancy picture"!

2 Maggie stories....

Friday afternoon Maggie and I were in the car and out of nowhere she said, "Koala bears aren't really bears."  So I asked what they were and she replied in her most matter of fact voice...."they're Marsupials." When I asked what made them Marsupials she told me they had pouches for their babies and that Kangaroos were Marsupials too. I guess they teach more then letters and numbers at preschool these days! Smarty pants!

Friday night Maggie was talking to my parents on Facetime, she asked grandpa if he was still going to camp Saturday to work, even though a storm was coming. He said he probably would go. and she said, "Grandpa, I think that would be a poor choice." Really, where does she get this stuff?

WHOA!!

Yikes, the weather here yesterday was crazy! Thankfully we didn't get the predicted tornados, but we did get several inches of hail and really high winds. Unfortunately our new roof (thanks to last years hail storm) is less then 2 weeks old, I'm not sure the hail did much damage to it, but there are a few shingles in the yard, so we might have to get back on the roofers list.

Grace didn't seem to notice the storm and Maggie was so excited to run out and pick up "ice balls" that she wasn't nervous at all. With about 5 minutes to spare we decided to move the camper inside the warehouse at Norfolk Iron, thank goodness, it may not have held up as well as the house.

brrrrrrr....ready set....

....daddy, will you come with me.

If it we're up to Maggie we'd have a freezer full of ice balls. We settled on one little bowl.
There was lots of flooding around town after the storm passed, besides the hail we got somewhere between 3 and 6 inches of rain. This picture is of the main street downtown. I ran to the store (to buy flashlight batteries) right after the storm, right off the highway there was a car sitting at a stop sign, the water was about an inch from the windows and the guy was sitting on the roof. I called 911 and the operator told me that he was out of luck and he was just going to have to wait for the water to go down because they were out of officers and there was a huge list of calls to cover.

Last night we went to the Carly and JJ's for supper. We decided if we were going to be stuck in a storm somewhere we might as well be stuck together. Arnie, Maggie and Gracie got to meet baby Henry.....Maggie couldn't believe how little he was.

I think they were doing the rain dance....
It still sounded like there was a threat of storms last night, so we decided to have a family slumber party in our basement. I don't think any more storms came, but maybe we just slept through them.

Our poor plants, trees and landscaping are pretty beat up. There is mulch everywhere! It's supposed to be very windy this afternoon, hopefully it won't all blow away.

Oh well, I'm greatful that we didn't need the laundry baskets of clothes that I moved to the basement and that I could carry up all the things I moved down there for safety. God is good.

keeping up...

I haven't done a great job of it this week. Aunt Joyce just reminded me that she is accustomed to a "fix" of my kids every couple days and I'm off track :) There must be a baby boom going on, I've worked more this week (and next) then I have in a long time...By the time the kids go to bed I'm so warn out I can't think straight enough to blog....excuses, excuses.

Grace will still only walk when we work with her, she doesn't see it as an efficient means of transportation when she really wants something. I'm hopefully that when she starts walking some of the things she's constantly messing with, will be low enough that she will stop noticing them. Have I mentioned that not only can she open the baby gate but she can also remove the outlet covers from the plugs. She's very proud to crawl over and hand them to me. Stinker! She also has a new favorite thing to mess with.....
....notice she had to roll back the rug to get to the register, because I thought covering it might take care of the problem....silly me!

She's also working hard at hiding my cell phone, the remotes, whatever else she can find....

...It's a good thing I watched her do this, can you imagine how long it would have taken me to find my phone inside Noah's ark?

Maggie and Arnie had a lunch date at Norfolk Iron today. She loves when they get to do that, they pick up jimmy john's and go back to the office. When I got there to pick her up, the first thing she told me was "MOM, dad let me have my own diet coke." That should help with nap time! Then she told me that today she started on the BROWN DRAWERS at school. The drawers are color coded and have different reading words and pictures in them to match up. She didn't use to mention them to us very often, she must be flying through them now because every day she reports on her progress. She only has a couple more colors and then she'll be a "reader" and get to use workbooks, she's so excited she can hardly stand it.

On the way home Maggie also declared that she is going to have a contest to help decide her new nickname, currently the winner is Chuck, but I guess she's open to suggestion.

Grace is getting really good at a few words and every day it seems like she learns a handful of new ones.  Unfortunately for Reagan, today she's been practicing (and getting really good at) wagging her finger and saying (loudly) DOG SIT! DOG SIT!
That's just what Reagan wanted, one more kid trying to tell her what to do!

I think it's official.....

....we have a walker!

I'm pretty sure she's been waiting an entire year for that tackle on her sister :)
Before bed we had a pajama party in Maggie's room....
